The Retail Business Improvement Scheme has continued to provide HTA retail members with a cost-effective means of sharing in a supportive and collaborative environment:
• best practice
• benchmarking
• discussing ideas and problems.
A full programme of topics has been drawn together for the 2012/13 year, with the assistance of industry-based consultants, to ensure that members are able to take full advantage of and gain the maximum value from, participation in RBIS. The programme will include:
• Annual benchmarking of P&L
• Low cost marketing techniques
• Customer service and selling
Eight groups (listed below) are run across the country bringing together a network of like-minded individuals with the aim to improve their business in a variety of ways. RBIS members will be encouraged to take advantage of this national network, through prior agreement with the consultants, and visit different groups and centres to share alternative experiences.

Quantifiable benefits of joining the RBIS are:
Increase in Turnover through an exchange of sales generating ideas
Enhanced Margin through cost reduction and retail price increases

Higher Space Productivity arising from improved understanding of return on space
Other benefits of membership that are less tangible but equally as important include gaining new ideas for products, alternative suppliers, access to impartial advice, independent perspectives from like-minded peers and encouragement to push ahead with business developments.
Recent improvements as a result of membership of the scheme are:
...after much encouragement from other members of the group a catering offering was implemented from scratch and resulted in a significant uplift in customers numbers and turnover.
...a member who made major changes to the entrance found that their customers were more exposed to their total product offering.
...a member increased sales significantly by improving their use of hot spots within their garden centre.
