HTA Environmental Strategy

The Garden Industry is a net contributor to the environment in the UK. The core of the garden industry is environmental enhancement through the propagation, planting and maintenance of plants.

Envionmental Strategy cover

Not only are plants entirely organic but they contribute oxygen, take up carbon dioxide and provide habitats for the nation’s flora and fauna.  However, every industry has an environmental impact and the purpose of this Strategy is to identify the key areas where the sector can impact on the environment and what can be done to minimise the negative impact and promote the positive impact.

The garden industry, as represented by the HTA, is made up of:

  •  Retail outlets (Garden Centres and Retail Nurseries)
  • Nurseries (growers of ornamental plants – outdoors and under protection)
  • Landscapers (construction and maintenance of domestic gardens)
  • Manufacturers (suppliers of manufactured goods to the Garden Industry)

This Strategy is designed to embrace the full supply chain and the sectors listed above.  It also extends to consider the environmental impact of the gardening consumer.

As the trade association for the garden industry the HTA is committed to assisting the industry in improving its environmental performance.  For this reason the HTA is a signatory to the Trade Association Forum Climate Change Declaration wherein the association commits to take measures internally and outwardly to members to promote business improvements that lead to environmental advantages.
