The Solution

The campaign is calling upon local authorities and the Department for Communities and Local Government to:

GtUK Aintree
  • Put a greater emphasis at both a local and national level on protecting and enhancing green spaces in the street scene
  • Introduce planning guidance at a national level to support the greater use of planting in the urban street scene
  • Introduce a National Indicator for inclusion in Local Area Agreements focused on urban planting and green landscaping
  • Increase enforcement by local government officers of the delivery of planting
  • Adopt the Greening the UK model motion
  • Review local authority service contracts and ensure they have access to suitably qualified horticultural advice by increasing the number of planning officers with horticultural training and qualifications
  • Encourage exemplary procurement policy in the development of new green spaces by and for local authorities
  • Radically rethink how councils renew neighbourhoods and the street scene
  • Highways Department Officers should increase planting and learn from other exemplar projects
