The activities of the group are focused on the following two areas:
The group runs events each year to discuss research needs, share results and discuss promotional activities.
The BRG is a major financial contributor to Roses UK (http://www.rosesuk.com/) which co-ordinates the presence of rose exhibitors at the Hampton Court and Gardener's World Live shows. Members are also involved in the selection of Rose of the Year.
The BRG supports the ongoing management and promotion of the internet rose locator http://www.roselocator.com/. Members have seen considerable amounts of business driven from this site.
Promotion to ‘Marginal’ Gardeners
The BRG is keen to promote roses to people who maybe have not considered growing them before and to broaden interest beyond the rose enthusiast. In June this year the BRG linked with the HTA's PlantforLife campaign to promote roses as ‘Plant of the Month’ with over 700 garden retailers participating. In response to members' suggestions the BRG has also produced a DVD called 'Successful Rose Retailing' aimed at inspiring retailers to demystify roses for the marginal gardener, with ideas for merchandising and rose care in the plantarea. The DVD which is being distributed with the July HTA News, can be viewed below, along with downloadable copies of the popular BRG Rose Merchandising Guide and advice published last year. In 2009 the BRG funded a major PR-based campaign to promote roses, based on the ‘Gourmet Roses’ concept which provided a PR hook to help get roses into the consumer media. BRG members are invited to events to discuss these concepts and promotional ideas.
The BRG is represented on the Horticultural Development Company (HDC) Hardy Nursery Stock Panel and is actively involved in developing and communicating research.
The association produces a number of newsletters each year giving details of BRG activities, R&D and any other relevant information. Click below to view recent newsletters.
The BRG is open to any HTA member with an interest in roses and at no extra cost. For more information contact HTA, on email email@example.com
