RHS and HTA get together for autumn planting of pansies
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) with the help of some Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) members is planning a massive ‘pansy and viola plant-in’ on Tuesday, 2 October at the charity’s flagship garden, RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey.
Around 60 RHS staff, HTA members and volunteers will be planting more than 5,000 pansies and violas for a colourful display in containers, hanging baskets and in a large open area. Gardeners visiting the display are sure to be inspired by the colour and planting possibilities.
"As gardeners know pansies and violas are superb at providing winter colour in gardens," says Colin Crosbie, Curator at RHS Garden Wisley. "Planting them at this time means that there will be colour in the garden from now until spring when the plants, having settled in should be spectacular. We hope that gardeners will come along and see for themselves. But if they can't make the 2nd October then hopefully they will visit Wisley some other time and see the fantastic colour this border will give over the winter months."
This pansy and viola planting is one of the ways the RHS and HTA are working together to show gardeners that autumn planting can have many benefits.
"Violas and pansies are great plants to dispel any winter blues," says Charmay Ball, Chair of the HTA Seasonal Plants Group. "We are really pleased to be working with the RHS on this project as part of our ‘Plan it, Plant it this Autumn' campaign. We hope that this display will get gardeners thinking about using these versatile plants even more."
